Traditionally, the days between Christmas and Lent are called “Ordinary Time” on the Christian calendar. Because this is not a holiday period, “ordinary” sounds like a good description.
But “ordinariness” does not describe the spirit we seek to have (and share) in the church.
Whenever we walk into church and meet one another in the love of Jesus Christ, we enter a new time and place where fresh possibilities, stirring opportunities and living hope await us. As the Apostle Paul writes in one of his New Testament letters (2 Corinthians 5:17): “Anyone in Christ is a new creation. The old has passed away. Everything has become new!”
In practical terms, every Sunday is the occasion for hurts to be healed, grief to be comforted, and injustices addressed. Likewise, weekday gatherings strengthen and equip us to face great challenges with the grace, power and peace of God.
Indeed, good things are happening right now at Wauwatosa Presbyterian! Church members have been ordained as deacons and elders to lead and serve God’s people. Preparations are underway to baptize children and adults. The Lord’s Supper is celebrated the first Sunday of each month, bringing us closer to God and each other. Wednesday evening suppers and study nourish all ages in body and soul. Spiritual growth helps those who feel a bit “stale” to break out of the “ordinary.” And a supportive, welcoming community embraces us at all times.
Ordinary Time? On the calendar, maybe. But at WPC, there’s nothing ordinary about it! Come and see!
