Homegrown Pork & Poultry

(RETURN TO MARKET)

WPC's own Isaiah Fraley has spent the last several months working at Homegrown Pork & Poultry, a farm in Western South Dakota.

Their website is: www.homegrownporkandpoultry.com

Homegrown Pork and Poultry is a diversified, small-scale farm and ranch located on the Pine Ridge Reservation in southwestern South Dakota. Established in 2016, our mission is to consistently provide our customers and community with the highest quality pork, produce, and poultry available. In 2019 we decided it was time to take the farm to the next level. We can be found at the Black Hills Farmers Market in Rapid City every Saturday. Seasonally at the farmers market in Martin, SD and now we are offering online purchasing and pickup at a drop site near you in Western South Dakota!

In an effort to undertake agricultural operations focused on the well-being of individuals, animals, the environment, and the community, we remain committed to the following four principles:

It's good for you

Both our pork and poultry are raised truly on pasture. They always have been. They always will be. This means higher levels of good-for-your-heart Omega 3's, antioxidants like Vitamin E, and that good healthy fat. All of our animals are hormone and antibiotic free. In addition, each time you choose to purchase from Homegrown, you're helping to support local farmers, who keep their money in South Dakota.

It's good for the animals

We strive to provide all our animals with a stress free environment, from birth to harvest. This means unlimited access to fresh water and pasture, frequent movement, and daily health checks. We take pride in our breeding stock, and are working diligently to produce pigs that thrive in the ever varying conditions of the prairie.

It's good for the Earth

Soil management is at the heart of what we do. We are in the fourth-year of developing an integrated grazing management plan in an effort to establish pastured grazing paddocks that can support our growing ranching and farming operations. Unlike large, concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs aka factory farms) that produce water that can contaminate waterways, our rotational grazing system improves soil quality. Next time you see us ask about how we are continually striving to raise our animals in a holistic ecosystem mindset. We love to chat about it!

It's good for the community

We actively strive to give back to the community where we live and work. Homegrown Pork and Poultry is a frequent stop on local and regional farm tours, and we are participants in our local food sovereignty initiative. In 2018, we started a program where individuals and families can donate to our Community Supported Agriculture model, which helps to feed young people on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations.
